What to Expect When Starting a Probiotic

We live in a world of instant feedback. We can make or change plans at a moment’s notice with forecasts that track the weather minute-by-minute, and we have apps that, with a quick input of our daily food and exercise, give us instant insight into our future health. Something about human nature craves predictability. It’s only natural that when adding a probiotic to our daily wellness routine, we would want to know what to expect.

Most people starting a probiotic have a basic knowledge of what probiotics do; they’re looking for one to help promote digestive health, support their immune system, or maintain their general wellbeing.*

If you’ve just started taking a probiotic and have yet to feel or notice anything, that’s OK! Many people don’t notice immediate changes, and this is completely normal. Some individuals do notice immediate digestive symptoms like abdominal rumbling, bloating, gas, and more frequent trips to the bathroom, which is also completely normal. The diversity of bacteria in our digestive tract varies from person to person, and when you take a probiotic, you may be introducing new species to your microbiome.

When healthy bacteria are doing their job, minor shifts in the microbial balance of your digestive tract can occur, which can lead to minor digestive discomfort. These symptoms are generally temporary and subside within a few weeks. If these symptoms persist, make sure to follow up with your doctor.*

Over our lifetime, the diversity of bacteria that reside in our intestines ebbs and flows and can be influenced by our consistent behaviors. Our day-to-day diet, including consumption of fiber, sugar, saturated fats, protein, and alcohol can all impact the diversity of species in our gut.[1] Stress, nutrient intake, and medications can also shift the balance of healthy and unhealthy gut microbes. Did you know that most probiotics are transient and that their time spent occupying our intestines is fleeting? That’s why consistent daily use of a probiotic is necessary to experience its benefits.

Evidence abounds that greater diversity of our microbiome is associated with good health.[2]Strain-specific formulations can be used to target the specific benefits you desire, from women’s health to immune health and stress management.* Regular daily use of your probiotic is the key to reaping its numerous benefits.

Think of taking a probiotic like starting an exercise routine: it takes more than one workout to become physically fit. Positive results come from consistent effort over a period of time. The same is true with taking a probiotic; FortifyTM probiotics are most effective when taken daily, so make them part of your wellness routine and stick to it. Soon, you and your probiotic will be taking on the world together.
