10 Ways to Feel Better This Year

The first few months of a new year are a time to set intentions for what you want to accomplish in the future, like running a 5k race, owning a home, or getting a promotion. It’s also a great time to start adding small, healthy habits to your day-to-day, like prioritizing self-care, eating more vegetables, or getting up earlier. These simple tips will help you be your best self every day.

Spend time outside. Fresh air and time in nature can lift your spirits, calm your worries, and give you a much-needed dose of vitamin D, especially in the winter. (Just remember to wear SPF.)

Eat the rainbow. Can you eat a fruit or vegetable from every color of the rainbow in a day? Challenge your family to try. It’s a fun and easy way to get the nutrients your body needs, and yes, smoothies count!

Practice gratitude. Keep a gratitude journal and write down just three things you’re grateful for every day. The benefits of gratitude are myriad, and practically guaranteed to lift your mood.

Schedule in self-care. Maybe your version of self-care is an hour-long massage. Maybe it’s a long run on the weekend or cooking a gourmet meal for your family. Whatever it is, make it a priority, even if you have to block out the time on your calendar. Caring for yourself means you’ll have more energy to care for others; it’s as simple as that.

Improve your digestion. Occasional Gas, bloating, constipation, and other digestive issues can really throw off your day. Consider adding a probiotic to your daily wellness routine to help support digestive and immune health.*

Drink more water! It sounds so easy but getting an adequate amount of water can be a challenge at first. (The recommended amount for adults is 64 oz., or about eight glasses a day.) Keep a large (but not too large) water bottle at your desk or in the car and try to empty it completely at least three times a day: in the morning, after lunch, and in the evening. If you don’t love the taste of water, add lemon or mint for a spa vibe. If you usually have a soda, juice, or coffee mid-day, swap it out for water twice a week to start and keep going from there. You may find your preferences start to change.

Declutter your life. You don’t have to spend an entire day cleaning and organizing to clean up clutter. Once a week, take 10-15 minutes to focus on decluttering just one area of your home or workspace: the bathroom cabinets, your junk drawer, your desk. Get rid of items that are past their expiration date or no longer usable and donate things that can be put to good use elsewhere.

Make time for quality time. If you have a lot on your plate, chances are date night or dinner with friends tends to fall by the wayside. Don’t let it! Spending time with loved ones, even if it’s just a half hour visit over coffee, fosters much-needed social connection.

Pay it forward. Buy coffee for the person behind you in line, compliment a stranger, or ask a new coworker or neighbor out for lunch. Kindness is contagious, and when you make a point to do something nice for someone each day, you may find that not only do you feel happier, but that happiness is contagious.

Unplug. If you find yourself struggling to stay away from your devices and losing precious time in the process, try to make a point to regularly put the phone or tablet down and do something creative, productive, or stress-relieving. Go for a walk with your family without your phone or try leaving it in another room while you read a book or eat dinner.
